Room #32 – Refreshing Living Room
Sun drenched warmth…less clothing (get your mind out of the gutter)…the scent of flowers in the air…buzzing bees…lazy walks…ice cream and popsicles…it’s SUMMER! Time to look forward to more nice days than bad…time to lighten our loads, brighten our outlook and refresh our spaces.
It’s time to kick back and enjoy the world around us and what better example of this relaxed state of mind than a flamboyance (WHAT A FRIGGIN’ AWESOME name for a group) of flamingos doing their thing, chillaxin’ in crisp water whilst basking in the rays of a glorious sunset sky! I am in constant AWE of the abundant beauty of Mother Nature…and these flamingos are WERKING IT! Don’t hate.
So let’s strip this down (get your mind out of the gutter, Part 2)…and take a look at what makes this easy, breezy space so darn enticing. There are a few things I employ in my Roomologist bag o’tricks that help to immediately calm a space down. Trick one: limit the palette (the softer the colors, the more effective this trick is). This doesn’t necessarily mean only neutrals or going bonkers with beige…it just means pick your top 2 or 3 color families and use subtlety differing tones of each. Trust me…this will save your sanity because nothing is as fruitless as trying to color match items in a room exactly. Besides going cuckoo for coco-puffs, employing this exact match tactic would result in a flat and BBBOOORRRIIINNNGGG space. You know it’s bad when I have to spread a word out like that to make my point.
Working hand-in-hand with trick one is trick two: reduce contrast. By keeping the colors in your palette in the same tonal range, everything flows together and makes your eyes go…AAAHHH. It’s just so darn soothing. I did add a spattering of black/dark pieces for a little punctuation…which, as a bonus, actually helps accentuate the subliminally tranquilizing effects of the restrained palette. Go figure.
Trick three: when I show restraint in one aspect of design (color), I up the ante on another aspect (texture). This helps me to maintain a healthy dose of interest in a space…cuz NO ONE wants to spend time in a BBBOOORRRIIINNNGGG room…especially when competing against the glories of summer. Isn’t it crazy that adding more texture doesn’t take away from the calming effect of the space? It’s magic and only the gods of design can account for this. No further explanation necessary. From the shell encrusted chandelier, carved console and smooth candle votives (remember…smooth is a texture too!) to the lacy curtains, rattan armchair and rope bound (kinda kinky) nesting tables…you’ll be squawking with delight (which is actually more vigorous than squealing…so you’re welcome) each and every time you step into this space.
Trick four (and the most important in my book): ALWAYS include a bit of Mother Nature in EVERY SPACE. Living plants, rocks, gems, shells, feathers, and even fire…anything with Mama’ NayNay’s signature on it enhances every room in a multitude of ways, least of which, serving as a reminder that we live in a wondrous world. Enjoy the summer my Roomatoids and try to be a little more flamboyant…it can be totally refreshing.
