ROOM #10 – Library
Ok…before we get started…I already know what you’re thinking. He’s lost it. He’s bought a ticket to a place far, far away and he ain’t coming back. Although I consider cray-cray to be a complimentary term, I think once I’ve explained myself…you’ll be on Orbitz.com checking out ticket prices to my special place.
So let’s look at that inspirational pic. Who knew blueberries were so Skittle-riffic? As unbelievably beautiful as this image is, I must confess, this was one of the more difficult rooms for me to compose. But, once I stopped fighting the barrage of colors and tasted the rainbow…everything came together. Let’s call it Dr. Seuss on the ol’ wacky-tabacky. What time is it you say? Oh, it’s 4:20 and time to retire to the library for a little readin’, a little drinkin’ and a whole buncha’ munchin’!
Let me set the scene. I’m envisioning a long room with some presence and stature: 12 foot ceilings, with grandiose French doors on one end and a wall studded with art on the opposite. The walls are cloaked in a plum wallpaper with a wandering, botanical print. The floor is coated in a polished blue marble that practically begs you to perform a kooky jig on it. Who cares if it’s a library?
Flanking the ooo-la-la French doors are plush, velvet, aubergine drapes. That’s right…aubergine. Crayons are purple, scene stealing drapes are AUBERGINE! This is where my crazy tornado table is going to reside with its partner in crime, la chaise orange’. Actually those chairs are so cool, let’s make it a double. Dangling above like some strange, exotic fruit is a pendant so yummy, you’ll want to take a bite. But don’t…it’s glass. Call this a games table, an intimate dining table, or just a table…this versatile little set up will get PUH-LENTY of use.
On the opposite end of our table setting will be a desk area. I imagine a menagerie of art climbing up the walls…and in front of it, my three-legged “desk”. Behind this goiterous curiosity is an elegant peacock chair the color of blueberries and woven of rattan and wonder. Whether it’s writing the next award-winning fantasy novel (mermaid/zombie love story anyone?) or checks for your Costco delivery of Doritos and guacamole, you’ll be in your happy-place doing it here.
Finally…the crowning glory and centerpiece of my bookatorium…my serpentine couch in all its fuchsia glory! I NEVER thought I would work something like this in one of my rooms. I guess I didn’t realize how much talent and power I actually possess. It scares me sometimes, but I take medication for it. This delightful little number would be stretched out down the center of my library…with a sprinkling of wooden accent tables all around it. Behind it, a wall full of wavy bookcases (yes…your eyes are fine), like trellises full of knowledge blossoms. And dangling above, a chandelier of kaleidoscopic delight…also tempting…also dangerous to eat.
Finally, what library is complete without a bar…or as some of my friends call it, the well of life. I wouldn’t dream of setting up a learny-room without one. Honestly, how can you expect people to read without a stout Shirley Temple in hand?
I really do hope you enjoyed this wild ride through my imagination. In true hippy fashion (GO GOEDUCKS!), I decided the best thing to do was to go with the flow on this one. I used neutral, organic shapes and materials to temper the mad cap colors of the room AND play up the fun factor at the same time, and ended up with a space worthy of the Cat In The Hat himself.
